The Son

That could have been my son
I could have been his dad
A child lying fast asleep
Snatched too soon from my hands

I reach across the bed
I feel his slow warm breath
A sure and certain measure
Of his sure life and my poor love

Now I nod at the mark of time
So far from him now
I still can remember
He was my reason to live
