Who will be tribute this Australia Day?

Let Our National Hunger Games Commence.

Again as happens every year, we’re very close to that special ceremony  that takes place every Australia Day. For those who may not know, this is the process followed.

First we need the nominations. Unlike Australian of the Year and citizenship ceremonies this one occurs almost in secret.

But over the years, it’s easy to discern the criteria required.

Usually a person, more likely female than male, more likely in a minority , more likely outspoken, most likely reasonably well known.

Usually not a stale white male, nor an obvious patriot.

A clue to help you discern who this year’s winner might be: last year’s was cricketer Ash Gardner.

And next we must give them the opportunity (disguised as free speech) to say what they really think about Australia Day: that say it commemorates an invasion, etc.

Or not to shop at Woolies.

Then comes the pile on.

Usually by social media but sometimes overlapping into the mainstream media.

Usually using words like woke, divisive and unAustralian. Usually involving a lot of shouting and swear words and threats of violence. Same as what happens at the BBQ when you try to offer a different opinion: your free speech gets cancelled.

And the debate continues until Australia Day expires again for another year.

Of course if we all agreed on a national day this ceremony which as a civilised nation is our nearest equivalent to human sacrifice (or the Hunger Games) can sanction : would not be required.
