Why haven’t you smiled these last ten years?

I don't think I've ever seen you smile.
Why haven't you smiled these last ten years?

Well if I may be permitted to speak,
men like you are constantly interrupting -
And then men like you never apologise.
And if I may be permitted to keep speaking,
It's because women like us must constantly
apologise - don't forget we add the passive pause -
one second - just in case of premature interruption,
and then maybe if you will stay quiet - we can "interrupt".

Or perhaps Mr President, it's because women like us,
are expected to ask the "virtuous" questions - those
oh so easy enquiries that robe kings in praise, while we
verbally curtsey to your empty answers worded in dust.

Or perhaps you're reminding us of that false constancy
Where man's place is to speak and women's to listen?
Or perhaps you think that's the natural order of things -
the one we need reminding of - know your silent place.
