A Gentle Remonstration

Afterwards you will see eventually,
How you always took the initiative,
Always applied the soothing palliative,
Always first with the preemptive apology.

Saying sorry was always your responsibility,
Accepting blame for an unanticipated future.
Shamed regardless by pre-decided censure,
Always your mistake then and completely.

And so penitently you tried to fix everything up,
Sacrificing your needs as ashes in their fire
While so bloodied you tried to anticipate their desire.
And so slaked for water they emptied your cup.

So kindly
let me remonstrate
with you.
Walk gently
with yourself
As first you did with me.
